Everyone’s mad about cake design
Cakes shaped like shoes, little trains and skyscrapers. Or tiered cakes like William and Kate’s wedding cake. This trend started in Britain but it’s becoming really popular in Italy too.
It is the mania for cake design: real works of art made with sugar paste and colorful icing. Cake designers produce these creations, especially sought-after wedding cakes, which can take weeks to make. Everyone is always amazed by them, something which Buddy Valastro, the most famous pastry chef in America, knows all too well. He is originally from Lipari, and owns Carlo's City Hall Bake Shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, which works 24 hours a day to meet the demands of his customers, ranging from VIPs to normal people, who are prepared to wait a considerable length of time for one of his delicious creations. His nickname is the “Cake Boss”, and he’s the star of the program of the same name, broadcast in Italy on the satellite channel Real Time (31) every Friday at 11.10pm, where he reveals the secrets and behind-the-scenes drama involved in sugar art.
